If you are like many people on the planet, you may be concerned with the environment. You know that there is only one earth, and we have to start taking better care of it. Although governments and corporations need to do their share of cleaning up the environment, individual people should also participate and do what they can. These are a few easy changes you can adopt to make the world a cleaner place.
Reuse and Recycle
Trash, especially trash that does not biodegrade, is filling up our landfills and polluting our waterways. However, many products made today can be either reused or recycled, including plastics. For example, you can reuse yogurt, sour cream and peanut butter containers for storage or to start your garden seeds.
In addition, you may be surprised by what you can recycle today. Just search your local recycling centers, e.g., Fort Lauderdale electronics recycling, and you will find a list of things that can be reused or turned into new products. For example, plastic bags from the grocery store are being turned into benches, reusable grocery bags and other useful items. Glass and metal products and containers are 100% recyclable.
Conserve Energy
Fossil fuels and their use in producing energy create greenhouse gasses. You can conserve energy in several ways. For example, switch to LED bulbs and turn off lights and electronics when you leave rooms. Choose energy efficient electronics and appliances and unplug those that you aren’t using regularly, such as toasters, waffle irons and guest room TVs. Replace inefficient insulation and windows.
Also, reduce your fuel consumption by biking, walking, telecommuting, sharing rides and using public transportation. In addition, consider combining your errands into one trip.
Avoid Toxic Chemicals
You probably use chemicals every day, from cleaning products and air fresheners to fertilizers and weed killers. These toxic chemicals transfer through your water pipes and soil and get into groundwater, rivers and oceans. You can help the environment by choosing nontoxic chemicals. For example, choose natural cleaners and substitute chemical air fresheners with natural products, such as essential oils. Pull your weeds and use naturally derived or organic fertilizers in your plants and grass.
Compost
If you have a back yard, you can create your own compost. If you don’t, you may find that you can contribute to your city’s composting efforts. You can compost most of your yard and kitchen waste, including peelings, grains and even paper towels and cardboard boxes. All of these items are biodegradable and will produce nutrient-rich compost that you can use to grow food, flowers or other plants around your yard.
Every person can make a difference. If you are concerned about the environment, adopt environmentally friendly habits, such as recycling.
